Something I Learned
Have you ever experienced a sugar rush and then a crash? You know that feeling after you scarf down a snickers, boom energy for 30 minutes, then you CRASH, need a nap and you’re starving! Have you ever felt that way from fruit? Yep it happens, same idea with natural sugars. Don’t get me wrong, grabbing a banana or apple is a much better choice than a snickers bar, but it's possible to prevent the sugar high and the crash. I read if you pair your fruit with a food high in protein, fiber, or fat it buffers the amount of sugar being absorbed, which leads to a smaller rise in blood sugar levels. What does that mean? Instead of just breaking your fast with a banana, add in some almonds, or nut butter to help prevent that sugar high and then the crash 30 minutes later. The practice of pairing your carb with a protein or fat will also help you stay full longer. Try it out and see if you notice a difference.
Something I’m Loving
ALDI! If you have an Aldi close to you, you have got to give it a shot! If you haven’t taken the time to try some of their products, I get it, I was that way for a while. But believe me when you see the savings on your grocery bill you will be a FAN too. Here are some tips if you have never been.
Yes you need a quarter for the grocery cart, you get it back when you return the cart.
Bring your own bags. They do have paper bags you can purchase but if you are like me, I have a ton of reusable shopping bags. This also helps cut down on the number of trips into the house. You will also bag your own groceries, which i love! I group things together in the same bag for easy unloading.
If you don't know what to buy at first, start with all the fruit, veggies, canned veggies, milk and eggs.
Try out a few new items each time you go. I started with replacing the kids frozen chicken strips, popcorn chicken or chicken fries to see if they noticed. They didn’t! Next was cereal and snacks.
Their meats are great also!
Being a family of 6 I had to figure out how to get more food for less money. I do the majority of my shopping from Aldi. We also buy some things in bulk from Costco, and I pick up a few odd items from Kroger if Aldi doesn’t carry them. But when your daughter says “ this basket of groceries would have been like $400 at Kroger, but it’s less than $200 at Aldi” you know you are doing something right! Oh and our favorite part is the “fun Isle” which is seasonal Aldi Finds.
If you still aren’t sure, checkout these FAQs about Aldi. Give them a shot the next time you grocery shop and try out a few different items. Maybe grab the girl scout cookies that they sell all year!
This Week on the Menu Recipes
Lazy Lasagna - quick easy, add a side salad, dinner done. I will use a gluten free Noodle. Even though these noodles are oven ready, I still boil them before layering. I’m sure the noodles would be fine without it, but I have never taken the chance of a crunchy noodle in my lasagna.
Brinner- if you are part of the FWTFL community it’s a Low carb day. Enjoy bacon, sausage, eggs. Maybe breakfast tacos with no tortilla (or try a low carb option)
Crockpot fajitas - great option for a busy night. Dump everything in the crockpot, let it cook to perfection. You could add mushrooms in also if you like. Another option is to do this all on a sheet pan in the oven.
Keto Pork Chops - this recipe was recommended by a FASTer Way client, and everyone LOVES it, so I thought it was time to bring it back!
Monterey Chicken -My family loves this chicken! Instead of frying bacon and making a mess in my kitchen, I cook the bacon in the oven. Cover a cookie sheet with foil for an easy clean up. But I have been known to skip that too and use real bacon bits and it turns out just as good!! Add jalapenos on top for some spice. My regular sides with this are mashed potatoes and Broccoli.
Orange chicken- I buy Crazy Cuizine from Costco in the freezer section, and there is enough for 2 meals. I make white rice the night before and store it in the fridge overnight to make homemade fried rice, with some oil, onion, scrambled egg, and whatever veggies you like. My family prefers peas and carrots in the fried rice so I usually make stir fry veggies on the side (side note: I don’t like eggs, so no fried rice for me, I’ll have white rice and veggies) here is a Fried Rice Recipe as an option.
8 can Taco Soup - busy night weekend, this is a go to meal! Tons of flavor and super easy. You could do this in a crock pot, just brown the hamburger meat before. And use the leftovers for lunch during the week.
